Adam's Bootlegs DC Mix

So these are the not-quite-as-legal mixes that I've made over the years. This first mix up is from DC; next up are from my (previous) unemployed days in SB. Lots of memories in these songs. Enjoy.

Adam's Mixes: Volume 1 Download the Mix (85.7MB)
DC Mix: 1427 R St.
When I left DC to return to California, I didn't have much to do (a.k.a. unemployed), so I fired up iTunes and made this mix for my friends on the East coast and to keep the memories of DC with me. It comes to just under 74 minutes... so burn it and play it on your oldschool discman. Thats what I would do.
1. Portions for Foxes - Rilo Kiley
My old roommates favorite band. Great band but this song hits the next level. Lyrics are about how calling turns to touching which turns to sex. And then there's no mystery left. Have truer twenty-something words ever been spoken?

2. All Things Ordinary - The Anniversary
Love this entire album. The band shared a label with The Get Up Kids, and this album acted like my Four Minute Mile away from home. You don't know the Get Up Kids either? Check out both albums my friend. Seriously.
3. Hide and Seek - Imogen Heap
You've probably heard this one... on the O.C. Not my fault. Imogen is a queen of electronically-produced music, and this track is gorgeous. Where can I get one of those voice things?
4. Young Folks - Peter, Bjorn, and John
The defining song of the D.C. indie scene. But I also heard it in Best Buy. Either way, it brings the party (in case Imogen got you down).
5. One More Night - Stars
He starts with her back / because that what he sees / when she's breaking his heart / she still fucks like a tease. The rest is just as good, promise.
6. Recovery - New Buffalo
Very talented keyboardist, records her own stuff solo. One of the many cool Montreal bands. This is one I listened to during the toughest times - it's going to be okay.
7. What I Could Stand For - Mates of State
Had to include Mates of State. I used to sing made up lyrics to the second part of this walking to work. Still don't know the real lyrics. Something to do with august love. Dunno. Can you believe its only keyboard and drums? And they are married!
8. Reckoner - Radiohead
Is there a better band than Radiohead? Their In Rainbows album came out while I was in DC, and we pirated it on the CEB intranet. I know, pirating a free album is pretty lame. But this song is not. Check out the quiet section in the middle--comes back so strong. Awesome.
9. Sunday Seance - Blockhead
Only time I have ever called a radio station. This song played on the UCSB station as I drove back to SB from a long trip in Northern Califonia, marking the real beginning on my time back home. Blockhead makes beats for a bunch of indie rappers - he made this with only an old-school synth. Go keyboards!
10. Lover's Spit - Broken Social Scene
Gorgeous song from a gorgeous album. And it's about basically about blowjobs (I think). This song has it all.
11. Love Song - Sarah Bareilles
Is there a catchier song on the radio right now? Maybe Umbrella. MAYBE. Ask Nick about this one - he heard it about a hundred times in the last weeks in DC. And she plays the piano! Ill write her a love song.
12. Santa Monica - Everclear
My soundtrack to deciding to leave DC. Got me through the last months at my job. Remember: the beach is a state of mind. Go swim out past the breakers and watch the world die.
13. World of Hurt - Drive-By Truckers
DBT is one of the greatest bands ever. No joke. I saw them at the peak of their powers (their third guitarist left shortly afterwards) at the 930 Club and it blew my mind. This song sums it all up. Fucking great to be alive.
14. Njosnavelin - Sigur Ros
This is the nothing song. Starts slow and stays slow. Beautiful. A live recording too.
15. Yes We Can - will.i.am
Alright, alright, youve already seen the youtube video and you can't appreciate Scarlett Johansson's quirkiness through your headphones. No matter. Its still one of the most honest and cool songs youll hear. And it might help change the world, or get you to do it yourself. Either way, the world wins. Rock on.
